Monthly Worship Helps
(Updated 7/2/07)

August 2007

The liturgical season of Pentecost is in full swing.  With its focus on Jesus’ teaching, rather than key events in His life, the Gospel lessons follow Jesus’ ministry as recorded by the evangelist Luke.  His teachings in this month’s Gospel readings focus on the strong temptation of greed and its power to make money and possessions, things not evil in and of themselves, into idols that sinful man worships; the eternal importance of being ready in faith for our Lord’s return to judge all mankind, the signs of which are ever-present and warning us of its imminence; and the salvation truth that Jesus is the narrow door, the only way of  entrance into eternal life with God, where all His faithful people will be present at the eternal feast of the Lamb, Jesus, who was slain for the sins of the world.

Week of August 5 (10th Sunday after Pentecost)

OT:      Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-26 [Without faith in Christ, life is meaningless]

Ep:       Colossians 3:1-11 [Believers are admonished to set their minds on heavenly things]

Go:      Luke 12:13-21 [Jesus tells the Parable of the Rich Fool]

Week of August 12 (11th Sunday after Pentecost)

SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1OT:      Genesis 15:1-6 [God graciously promises Abram countless offspring]

Ep:       Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16 [Abraham’s faith in God is commended]

Go:      Luke 12:32-40 [Jesus teaches us to always be prepared for His return]

Week of August 19 (12th Sunday after Pentecost)

OT:      Jeremiah 23:16-29 [The omnipresent God of creation commands that His Word be spoken faithfully]

Ep:       Hebrews 11:17-31; 12:1-3 [Our eyes are fixed on Jesus alone, the Author and Finisher of our faith]

Go:      Luke 12:49-56 [Jesus seeks to complete His mission of self-sacrifice for sinful mankind]

Week of August 26 (13th Sunday after Pentecost)

SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1OT:      Isaiah 66:18-23 [God’s glory will be proclaimed among all nations]

Ep:       Hebrews 12:4-29 [Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant, gathers His people into His Church]

Go:      Luke 13:22-30 [Jesus is the narrow door through which people enter the feast in His Church]

Set like a jewel in the heart of downtown Birmingham is one of its most proud and useful possessions - Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Modeled after the Martha-Mary Chapel at Greenfield Village, the quiet dignity of the past is blended with the functional design of the present to meet the needs of our young and active congregation.
Whether you are a newcomer to Birmingham or an old neighbor looking for a church home, we want to welcome you to our midst. Redeemer is a church that offers diversity in its programs and outreach in its ministry so as to provide everything needed to serve the Lord. The mission of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer is to faithfully communicate the love of God, nurture people in their faith, and equip people to bring the love of Jesus to others.
